The line Baumann from Zwingelhausen and Burgstall
By Kurt Erh. v. Marchtaler, Stuttgart
It is not the kind of a farmer, to make a fuss about himself, however there
are things he likes to accent in conversations, because he is proud of them. To
this belongs also the time of settlement of his line on the same farm, at the
same place or in the same countryside.
To the serie of rural lines in this country, that originally were not native in
Württemberg but are now settled down here for more than 300 years, belong the
Baumann from Mittelschöntal near Backnang, that spread from there into the near
surroundings.
The stem father of the line is a Jörg Baumann in the middle-fränkisch village
of Munningen, who was already dead when his son settled down in the neighbouring
county residence Dettingen on the occasion of his marriage anno 1606. There his
son Gottfried (1615 - 1690) was born , who under the surname Baumann went into
service as a forest.knight to the duke of Württemberg and became the first
bearer of the name of this line in the country. In the year 1644 he married in
Erbstetten the Maria, living in Mittelschöntal, widow of the Hans Heller from
Lutzenberg. In the same year she gave birth to a son who was baptized to the
name Nikolaus. Not an entire year after the death of the parents which died
within four weeks, Nikolaus married 1691 in Erbstetten the Anna Maria a daugther
of Johannes Grauff from Weiler im Weinsberger Tal. She gave birth to three sons,
through which the lines branched out the first time. Only twelf years old was
the youngest of these sons, when Nikolaus left this world in the days of advent
in the year 1704, after beeing sick for a couple of years and also was deproved
of his speech due to a apoplectic stroke. His wife Anna Maria, who had „the
Praedicat of a pious Matron“ following the entry in the death register,
survived the hushband till the days of march 1726. The oldest son Johann
Gottfried Baumann, born 1691, married to Unterschöntal. Being weaver, he
married 1723 in Erbstetten Anna Catharine, the daughter of Heinrich Pfizenmaier
from Mittelschöntal. His yonger brother Georg Bernhard Baumann (1694-1760)
stayed in Mittelschöntal, where in the years 1725 till 1742 his 7 sons were
born, 5 of them died already as children. The oldet son Hans Jörg married 1758
in Unterweissach Rosina, the daughter of Martin Freytag in Cottenweiler. The son
Gottfired, born 1734, became linenweaver. In the year 1761 he married in
Erbstetten the Anna Barbara, widow of the farmer Johannes Schwarzbeck in
Sinzenburg. The mother could experience the mariages of both sons and the births
of grandchilds, before she left this world in August 1763.
The youngest sons of Nikolaus Baumann, Johannes Georg, builds up the
line Zwingelhausen
To there he came by his first marriage, 1729 in Kirchberg an der Murr, with
Maria Catharina, daughter of the at that time already deceased farmer Daniel
Bans in Zwingelhausen. She gave birth to 2 daughters and in between a son, named
as the father, before she succumbed in January 1735 the „heaty illness“. A
quarter of a year later Johann Georg held his second church-going with Anna
Maria Pfizenmayer from the Renthof and had another 11 children with her. In
Zwingelhausen the line was continued by the son Andreas (1745-1822) who lead to
the altar his contemporary Maria Pfizenmayer in 1767. Except one daughter, who
was married to Johann Gottfried Wagenblaß in Zwingelhausen since 1800, only to
elder brothers of her reached the marrriage, the other 4 siblings died young.
From these brothers, Johann Ludwig became the founder of the line Burgstall,
thatwill be handeled later. Theyounger brother Jakob (1774-1847) stayed in
Zwingelhausen, where he founded his household with Catharina Munz from the
Röhrachhof. The oldest daughter Christina Magdalena (1803-1874) married 1828 in
Kirchberg Johann Christoph Hahn, the daughter Anna Catharina contracted the
marriage in 1834 with Georg Michael Göz. Caroline Luise (born 1824) is said to
have married to Oberbrüden, Christiane Friederike to Backnang. Just in that
very place died also her brother Carl (1814- 1867) who had become a butcher.
From the three other brothers are derived the members of the oldest, middle and
youngest branch of this line. The latter was founded ny Jacobs youngest son
Johann Ludwig(1817-1890), whose son of the same name died there in 1919
unmarried whilst the two other sons Christian Gottlieb and Karl Friedrich both
took a born Layer as wife and settled in Kirchberg, so that the youngest branch
in Zwingelhausen became extinct. The middle branch was founded by Johann Michael
(1811-1865) when he lead home in 1838 the Anna Wildermuth from Völkleshofen.
Only the both youngest sons of the troop of seven children reached the marriage:
Johann Jakob married 1878 in Oppenweiler Caroline Christiane Haas from
Strümpfelbach, his brother Johann Gottlieb one year later the Rosina Catharina
Scholl and settled in Gagernberg. The oldest branch in Zwingelhausen was founded
by Jakobs samenamed son (1805-1876). With his wife, originating from there, Anna
Magdalena born Ade, he had 10 children, from which only one died young. The
oldest Sohn Georg Jakob (born 1828) moved to Oppenweiler, the next younger son
Carl Gottfried (1830-1908) married to Luise Gramm from Erbstetten since 1864,
settled first in the area of his wife, then he removed to Zwingelhausen, where
alsohis youngest brother Christian Ludwig (1833-1912) lived in the marriage
state since 1865.
What remains to discuss is the
line Burgstall
that starts from Johann Ludwig (1771-1820), who, as mentioned, is a grandchild
of the Johann Georg Baumann, who moved from Mittelschöntal to Zwingelhausen. To
Burgstall , Johann Ludwig came through his marriage in the year 1703 with
Magdalena Dorn from there. Seven daughters died in their childhood or unmarried;
the oldest daughter Regina Magdalena became the wife of the baker Johann
Gottlieb Gall, and as his widow the wife of the farmer Johann Georg Hill born in
Hertmansweiler. Also her brother Georg Michael (1799-1861), profession butcher,
was married twice. In Weiler zum Stein, he had taken Catharina Weiler from the
Heidenhof as wife. Three years later, when she was 1847 tore away from him by
death, he married Jahanna Catharin, the daughter of Carl Justus Kämpf, who was
ordered as conductor from the Stift Oberstenfeld to Mundelsheim. Some years
after the death opf her hushband she moved to Stuttgart with her two sons and
her daughter. Ten of the twelf children from the first marriage of the butcher
and temporary membrr of the municipal county Georg Michael Baumann were sons.
Four of them died in the childhood, two emmigrated later to the united states of
north America, another one to Australia. From the both daughters, the older one
died as child, the younger Luise Friederike married 1879 with Adolf Friedrich
Fischer in Burgstall. At the place the name was continued by the sons Georg
Ludwig (1827-1899), who has 2 daughters and a son Carl Friedrich born in 1885,
as well by his brother Johann (1832-1902). From his 6 children also only 1 son
stayed in Burgstall as the name carrier.
From the eleven generations, that the sex Baumann counts from the first
mentioned appearance of the stem father Jörg Baumann from Munningen until the
latest branchings, the members of nine of them can be named as Württembergers.
In this land, that has become the home of the line since 300 years, the Baumanns
have experienced some bad but also good times. As the men, who took their wifes
from the same rural circles of the nearer home, so have choosen the Baumann’s
daughters in their hushband selection. As a consequence the entire impression of
the line is rather homogen concerning the profession and the home in all
branches.
